He Challenged His Physical Challenge— The Success Story of Olasunkanmi Fagbemi @ DGV FASHION ACADEMY.

I remember the first day I met him at a speaking conference organised by the State for physically challenged people

image

It was an unusual gathering, and I was encouraged by the enthusiasm of these people, despite what Life dished them, they saw Hope in their future and themselves. It made me think “so how many so called ‘Able’ people would really go all the way to get themselves equipped with skills and training that would better their lives? They would rather sit and wait for some miracle…..”
At the meeting, I met the blind, deaf, dumb, those on wheelchairs etc. Some already equipped with a skill, and some trying to find their passion.
I remember a blind man in front seat that day, making slippers and weaving bags right there in the hall, one blind lady that was into wire-works- beautifully made……
After my lecture, during the Q & A session, one man on a wheelchair at the back of the hall asked if he could learn tailoring, that was his first time of coming into the midst of the physically challenged after the unfortunate accident that cost him his 2 legs. I answered him ‘Yes’, (in my mind I wasn’t thinking he would ever come to me)
He got my flyer and called me later, telling me how the lecture had blessed and encouraged him and others there. The following week, he was in my office for enquiries. ….. deep inside, I kept asking how do I say No, I was the one encouraging them to keep doing something……
That same week he started his training, November 2013.
He challenged me too.  We got him started and amazingly, his learning speed was too amazing! About the 2nd week he came he made his first top.

image

Everyone couldn’t believe it. How fast he learnt. His joy was indescribable, according to him, he’s not only learning, but he’s getting his life Back…..
We always use him as a reference point to other students,  “if Mr Sunkanmi could do it, then what are you waiting for”, “he challenged his disability, so you have to challenge your ability”

image

Uncle Muyiwa Ademola couldn’t help it the day he met him in class, he was sooo encouraged and went on and on talking to me and even encouraged me more…….

image

Today,  My   Sunkanmi is not just a student, but a reference point in DGV FASHION ACADEMY.
If he can do it, why cant you?, with all you have?, you can run around conveniently, yet what are you making of it? He refused to confine himself to the box life dished him, his determination to excel in the face of disability and inability has proved that, if you really want to, you will!

image

image

image

If you’re still waiting for the Golden Chance, or the Big Break before you make that move, here’s Mr Sunkanmi proving to you that Yes You Can Right Now!

image

The opportunity is waiting for you just as you are waiting for it, maybe a move is all you need to make and the lines will fall in pleasant places.
This man is a blessing to me, cos he made me see even my own ability in another light. I didn’t think I will have to train someone like him, doing it tells me I can do more and more. ….
Don’t sit down with all the gifts bottled up in you. They won’t find expression until you Push.
The world is waiting for you!
Mr Sunkanmi did. ……Yes You Can too.

UNDERSTANDING SILHOUETTES—FASHION LESSONS for You!- (DGV FASHION ACADEMY)

image

Sewing can come easy to so many people, but how many understand the real art of understanding what it takes to  bring out that eye-catching outfit?

image

Its how you work on your designs to create a particular impression. This doesn’t only pertain to shape,
image

but to the entire garment; fittings and accessories, and how it grabs attention as a whole.
image

As a fashion designer, you learn and master the art of designing and combining fabrics and essentials to achieve a beautiful eye-catching piece. And coupling being a fashion stylist to this makes you the master of the art.

image

(Which is our focus @ DGV FASHION ACADEMY)
Your job oversees the production and visualizes the end result. You must have seen it before the wearer does.
image

Understanding silhouettes makes you a master in this field. It includes your—–
*Fabric choices
*Trimmings and combinations *Colours, considering your client’s skin type and shade
*suggestions on matching accessories.

image

Have a good idea of the body features and parts to play on to create a perfect illusion on the on-lookers.

Natural Waist

image

This is one of the most flattering silhouettes as it draws the attention to the smallest part of any individuals waist.
Attention to the waist can be made with a seam/darts , belt, fabric, color change, applique etc. Be watchful in this area if your client is very busty. This also works well with heavy middles.
The point at which you work the waist point in matters.
High Waist

image

Same concept as natural waist but now the eye is raised to just below the bust line. This is extremely flattering on shorter individuals as it makes you appear taller.
High waist silhouette is also called Empire, which was made popular during the early 1800’s.
*creating this silhouttes works well on people with small bust.
*gives tall and long legs effect
Low Waist

image

Dropped or low waist brings your eyes to the hips or just above the hips. Basically dropped from ones natural waist line.
This look can elongate ones upper body, but can easily shorten you too. So be watchful.
The client/wearer should have long legs or short upper body to reflect this well.
Fitted
image

Fitted, exactly how it sounds. Fitted shows off all the curves on a body. If you’ve got it flaunt it! So the person really must have it.
Ensure the body can carry it! Dark colors can conceal areas you want to hide if the shape is not a perfect hourglass.
image

*Dark colours make big people appear slimmer
* Stripes makes short people appear taller
*Horizontal stripes makes a slim person appear wider.
* Combination of stripes creates perfect silhouttes if you can be very creative.
image

Trapeze
image

Also known as Tent or Trapezoid. This literally looks like a triangle on an individual. Thus it may not be the most flattering on everyone.
This silhouette works well with sheer fabrics as it still shows off your curves. detailing this design well can make it work better.
Suitable for inverted triangle shaped people.
Chemise
image

image

Think of chemise like a rectangle. From top to bottom its straight and shapeless. Very common on runways. It can hide a lot, shaped or shapeless.
Channel consistently brings out this silhouette each season. So Karl Lagerfeld must know something we don’t.
image
You can get away with this easily if you’re sharp. It’s mostly seen in
Shift dresses and tops.
Wrap skirts etc

Fit & Flare
image

image
Fit & Flare always have the shape and flow of an A-line and has the idea of a natural waist silhouette too. This silhouette is extremely common right now.
Dresses with pleats Peplums on and on……
image

And works well for variety of shapes also the point where you cut the waist matters.
image
image

Hope you have enjoyed learning about a few common silhouettes and now you can use some correct fashion terminology. It applies to men too in fabric and combo choices.
See you some other time. ….

The Meeting……..Within. ….

image

When you hear the word ‘Meeting’, What readily comes to mind? A group of people coming together for a common purpose; a gathering where people argue, drag issues way up,way down to attain a conclusion. …..
Meeting…….
When we have meetings, the aim is always to reach a particular conclusion and obviously a better one. No one wastes time on anything unprofitable.
Maybe you’ve been called for a meeting before, or you have called a meeting before, you would have noticed that the end result was probably the target from the beginning.
From this point of view, it literally means the end result is as important as the kickoff. …….is this how we all really see it?

image

There are different kinds of meetings. …..But the one I want to emphasise on is the ‘Self Meeting’
When was the last time you met with yourself?
Strange?
No matter how much anyone talks to you, until you talk to yourself , meet with yourself,  you can’t get anywhere. ….we all have to engage ourselves constantly in what we call “Self Meeting”. If you want to have a Head way, let the You inside hear your voice of hope, assurance,  and courage.  Most times people fail because they’ve already agreed with what circumstances and surroundings tell them. What do You see? What do You want to see?
What was the result You got?
Self Meeting is a kind of meeting no one can do for you and until you succeed in it, you’re probably headed nowhere.

image

Meet with yourself and let your voice be heard within You, Nothing happens until you push those negative voices behind and speak positivity to yourself from the inside.
The saying ‘if you think you can, you can;if you think you can’t, you’re right’
Wherever you want to get to, you must have reached there in your inner mind before it can happen.
Call a Self Meeting, take the steps, 2014 is counting again, dont let it slip.
