4 TIPS TO GROW YOUR FASHION BUSINESS

When you start a business, the main goal is to grow it to some level you have dreamt of or according to your business plan. Now, growing this business is easier to imagine than achieved especially as a small business owner.

Different situations and circumstances will give you hiccups on the path to growing the business. Today i will be sharing with you 4 tips that will help if you use them well.

I have used this tip for years in my businesses and I can say, they are indeed magically helpful if you are truthful to yourself in analysing them alongside your business goals and plans.

We will be using the same word GROW to break down the steps .

G – GOAL

R – REALITY

O – OPTIONS

W – WILL

Let’s break this down.

GOAL- ask yourself this question- What Do You Want To Do?

It sounds simple, but have you realised that when you ask people what they want, a high percentage of them reply with what they do not want. The natural mind is tuned somehow.

We know what you don’t want. You don’t want to fail, you don’t want the business to be slow, you don’t want customers who don’t pay but the main question is – What do you want specifically?

You want the business to grow? How big? What are the numbers you want to be recording? It is so easy to dream it, put it down in facts and figures. Don’t carry imaginary dreams in your head. Analysing them in details gives you clarity.

2. REALITY- This point is so KEY in the present day economy. What you want vs reality. What is happening now vs what you want. You will need to find a balance point with this.

Apart from economic factors, other surrounding factors apply.

What is happening in your business environment? Study and analyse to make your business growth easier.

I have had reasons to drop prices when I needed more money to break even in My business.

You need money but the economy is tight and sales are slow. To move sales up, you might want to drop some prices to attract more customers at the end of the day you will make sales and have some break even points.

Another part of reality is to sell what they need and want to buy not just what you want to sell.

3. OPTIONS – ask yourself- What can I do? What are the available options? There is no hard fast rule for success. Different routes lead to your destination.

Have options. Plan A ,B ,C and D. If this blocks, I will take another route and keep moving.

Lack of options is what causes stagnation when you experience the first roadblock in business. And really there are lots of roadblocks on the way.

4. WILL. – What will you do? What can you do?

If I will be fair I sharing a secret with you, this question has helped me a lot in my career growth. I ask myself before a problem happens- “What if this and this happens, what will I do?.”

In all sincerity, it has helped me prepare for some bad situations, of course the unexpected will always pop its head but you always having an idea of what to do , will help you cushion a lot of things.

MISTAKES TO AVOID BEFORE YOU LAUNCH YOUR FASHION BUSINESS.

When I was younger, the term ” self employed” sounded so fascinating, i really couldn’t wait to start and own my own businesses, yes the plural because I wanted to do a whole lot more than whatever I am doing now.

Being self employed is not as smooth as it sounds, especially when it means you work almost round the clock. It’s juicy parts also comes with its own perks and advantages, so on the days you feel low, those thoughts keep the ball rolling.

Let us leave the business life talk for a minute and talk about the real reason this post attracted you here. I guess, you are about to start a fashion business or you have just started one. With my experience so far, what can I say you should and should not do as a startup fashion business owner.

You want to own a fancy store, have amazing clients or customers, make a lot of money, all the pictures are vividly painted in your mind.

Now as you start setting up, all the pictures will start dropping a ‘buy me’ ‘buy me’ chorus in your head. The most logical thing to do before you ‘waste’ all your startup fund ( -by waste- I mean spend it on what you like but not what is presently needed by the business), is to have a list of all the things you would love to buy, list it all out.

After making this list, start by looking critically at each one and strike out the ones you will not be using daily. your business will grow and you will have time to buy more, don’t use all the start up funds to buy what you will need later.

Another thing to note is – if you cannot afford a store / shop, start from home. what will be the point of you renting a space you cannot pay for with the proceeds from the business.

Not everyone you see making millions in business shows you what they are doing.

You are not in business to show off, you are here to make profits not just money. if you will start from home, ensure you make it comfortable as possible so it doesn’t bore you out.

Our next point is – Know that every customer that walks in is not your lifelong customer, do not fight to please them at the detriment of the business. People will ask for ridiculous discounts, emergency deliveries and more…., if it works for you, do it, if it stresses you, be kind enough to yourself to leave it out.

if you are planning to go into ready-to-wear, think about having loads of clothes on the rack with no one buying them before you start. Spend more time building your client base, with adverts, videos and things that will attract them to you first.

last point for today will be, Never stop developing yourself, your skills and your knowldege base. i have been in this industry more than 20 years and i never go a day without trying to learn something new, not just for myself but also to teach my students at Ibadancity Fashion College. it keeps you fresh, it keeps you updated and knowledgeable when talking to others about what you know.

How I got my business name?

This is one area I enjoy discussing with startup business owners. It interests me and catches my fancy almost anytime. Maybe because I’ve had to deal with so many business names during my Entrepreneurship Development trainings for business owners

There are names and there are names. Let me say.

I’ve heard names that made me check ten times if my eyes were still working well lol 😆.

Have you heard a business name that didn’t sound like what you thought it should? Or let me say you heard the name and had another business in mind? It’s like naming a child with another culture’s name. Or like in my yoruba culture in Nigeria. Only twins can be called “Taye & Kehinde”, now imagine you meeting someone who says his or her name Is Taye. And the person isn’t a twin?

Now you get it. I suppose.

If you’ve not been in this shoes, and you own a business in naija I must say – Una Wehdone o.

I wish I could say may it never happen to you. But, knowing fully well that success stories comes with a lot of sides we don’t want to share with the public. I will say, what for it. Its not a curse, its the reality.

What happens when such things come up.

Okay, as a consumer and customer to other businesses, I will say no one is at fault really. Its always a battle of one side vs the other.

Either the client is the one at fault, trying to give the vendor a bad image due to some reasons known to them alone.


You will be surprised, some business owners set customers against their competitors in the name of pulling them down, for them to rise and shine better.

Same way, sometimes it’s the business owners who take up jobs they clearly can’t deliver and call for these unnecessary dragging.

Then we have these instances when no-one is at fault, but the 2 parties just can’t clearly understand and manage the simple situation till it gets out of hand.

If you ask me, oh yeah I have been there and in all occasions, I’ve ensured my part is well delivered to a good level of justification. The clients of course may not accept but I want a case where you hear the story and I can boldly say- I did my part.

I happened to work on a project a while ago which involved a 3rd party organisation. Things happened, clearly out of my control and the affected people were threatening fire and brimstone. I just dey observe, did what I could and left the rest.

Should this push you out of business?
Of course NO! You will likely face more troubles, they are the hurdles you cross to get to the top.

Just be fit and good to go. The more you scale, the better you get at managing your business.

How to Say No To Free Jobs as a Business owner

You will encounter people who ask fro free jobs in the name of publicity and promotions, no doubt. But, the question is – is it okay to keep accepting and giving in to it?

In my early years of starting my fashion business, I met a lot, I mean a whole lot of these people and I will share my personal take on this with you. Take the part that works for you and leave out the ones you don’t want .

There are influencers and celebrities, they do a lot in helping your business grow. As a new business owner, enter this kind of engagement with caution. Except you have a lot of financial reserve and can afford running the business for a while without expecting detailed profit.

Free Jobs mean zero profit, don’t forget. Free Jobs can help you but not at the detriment of the main goal of the business.

Don’t use too many of them in the name of getting famous. You are not the only one they are asking for the same privileges.

The part that baffles me is, the same people wear and flaunt ,they even advertise for foreign brand names all in the name of “I Belong and I wear luxury” – these brands don’t pay them but they’re happy to do free advert why?

These brands took time to grow their products, their brands and they became a name everyone wants to reckon with.

Have you done the same for your business for just 12 months?

What new thing have you added to your business in the past 6 months?

What improvements are you looking at in the next 3 months?

If you don’t have a good product everyone wants to have, the fame will only make your name ring in their ears, give you likes and followers but not paying customers.

In my business early years, I worked with a lot of celebrities and I realised if care is not taken you may keep attracting the wrong audience.

The willing ones assume your brand is for rich people alone. Or they feel they just can’t afford you.

Some assume you must be too busy for ordinary people like them.

On and on.

Choosing The Right Business Name

Let me start by asking how is your business going. For those planning to start, what are the steps you have taken?

How far have you gone with your business plan? Your growth plans? And startup plans? Note I have an economy coming up that will help you get this done in simple ways, as simple as ABC. I’ve penned down how I started and I am sharing it all with you in the books. Watch out.

Today, we’re talking about choosing a name for the business. For existing business owners, you may want to take a second look at your business name.

Does it need adjustment? Is it just okay the way it is for now? Don’t put yourself under unnecessary pressure if you are not yet sure. Take your time.

It’s a common thing to see business owners combine their names into acronyms to make a business name, or put the names in the family together to form another name. This is a good idea as long as it sounds good and not too long, difficult to spell and pronounce.

The name you will choose for your business is the name you want to be called. Don’t rush to select.

Consider how far you want the business to go. What is the vision? The end goal.

Your business name is unique, and your clients must be happy to relate with it.

If you choose a name that doesn’t relate to your business, people may get a wrong interpretation of what you represent.

Search for keywords in your industry. And work around it. I’ve seen people use beauty lingo in the fashion industry. It may sound okay, but the first impression customers get may mislead.

Let’s take an example

These 2 names belong to a fashion house. To the best of my knowledge, the first name sounds like a makeup business or a hair/ beauty business.

The second name is simple and general, could fit anything. This is an idea of how your name can mislead your audience.

Don’t choose names because you heard someone using it. Sometimes in the spirit of competition, I’ve seen business owners coin name close to what another person is using. It could be out of admiration. If you find yourself on this seat, try to be unique. It’s part of what you want to do.

Copying makes you lazy intellectually, if you don’t task your creativity, it won’t task itself. Carve out a niche for yourself with your business name.

For global brands, products or services- consider your foreign clients too. Simplicity does it.

Your business name will keep being on people’s lips. Don’t take it with fingertips.

Another issue is religion – for those who get over religious with business names. Its okay, it is a personal choice. But ask yourself, is your service, product or brand for some kind of religion only?

If not, you are already creating a demarcation which will affect the business growth.

Take a short time and review your business name.

Search for industry keywords.

Search for keywords in other languages, some languages have beautiful interpretations that are so easy to pronounce, spell and they sure sound exquisite.

HOW TO FIND CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

we all know that, One of the constant concerns of business owners is finding customers, and finding new customers constantly. Isn’t that why we are in business? Yet it apperas to be one of the hardest thing to achieve when the business starts.

This problem isn’t just common with new businesses, we are all on this table

You have a good, oh, even great product or service. is that all it takes to succeed? No. There must be people constantly patronizing, they bring the food to the table.

You can apply all the strategies, get active on social media, your facebook page is active, your instagram is popping – and you may even be getting likes; are they coming back to patronize?

Know that, once you start a business, the search for customers will never stop.

how will you find them?

  1. What is Your Plan? they won’t just drop from the skies, you need to set out a plan. and that starts with – What kind of customers are you looking for? define your ideal customer. This will be determined by your products or the service(s) you offer. Who are the people you want to attract to the business? set this all out ,it will be your first guide.
  2. Are you visible? can your customers see you? you can be in lagos and the people who need your products or services are in Abuja. many business owners attach sentiments and emotions to their location, even when they know its not working. Some claim “i’ve been here for long, i can’t just move like that” – What if the market has moved? Are you aware that market moves?
  3. Take advantage of potentials – meet them and interact with them. In simple words – SHoot Your Shot!!! If someone looks like the customer you would want, interact with them on their pages, face to face if you happen to meet them, let them know what you can offer. Do not be scared of making moves – its either you get a Yes or a No and that is part of business.
  4. Advertise – you need to push your business out for the world to see. Adverts vary, which one do you think will work for your business? – the one your audience or target market is more likely to notice quickly. Age range has a thing to do with this – older audience may be on radio, younger ones -on social media – and social media has levels and preferences based on age, social standing etc. Billboards, flyers etc. Just push the business out for the world to see.
  5. Do Promos and Offers that can attract. Take advantage of seasons.

hopefully, you can use any of this or all. Getting customers is not as difficult as it sounds or appears to be, it is all in your hands, stop waiting, make your move today!

We all get to that crossroad point of not really having a clear idea of what to do, or we have too many ideas and we are there juggling all the pot pourri of options ,looking for the best to pick and settle with.

do not stay too long on the fence, choose a side.

when you have a number of options. what do you do?

lets take a few tips on this today-

know your strength – no matter what you are doing right now, or what you plan to do, you know your own strength. dont let anyone lead you wrongly. even when your friends think you are strong in one aspect, many of us know the real areas of our strengths. this is no time to follow the crowd and ‘wannabelong’. The route to success requires you speaking the real truth to your own self.

in you industry or field, you know the areas you work comfortably at. Stressing yourself by trying to belong, will only kill your zeal. it will make you keep cutting a tree with a dull axe. find your strength zones.

the best key i will drop for you today is – what you want to do vs what the environment needs?

weigh it well.

are you set out to do what you love or what your environment needs.

align your passion to meet up with what is needed where you are, thats your top secret to sales and profits.

Being faced with different options is normal, now sit and decide which one is really needed where you are. Pick on that business first. its those small ideas that sum up to make big millions one day.

and if your dream is to do all, start with one. just make that move or share your ideas with someone that can give you a honest opinion and help you grow.
